Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging, Inc. covers a nine county area in rural north-central Ohio. It is conservative in lifestyle, holding fast to traditional values of independence, home ownership, neighborliness, family ties and hard work. The older population lives in small cities and villages or on farms. The major population center is Mansfield, a small city of 50,000 plus, located in Richland County. The majority of the county is still in rural acreage.
We have established a solid permanent network of service agencies for the elderly in our area. Local councils on aging are the focal points for senior services within our counties. The Boards of the councils on aging are effective advocates with county, city and township officials. With the AAA maintaining the standards and regulations of the programs, the Councils on Aging are encouraged to use as much local decision making as possible, including the local responsibility for raising local match funds. Many of the counties have successfully raised local levy dollars to help increase service delivery in their area. As community focal points, our Multipurpose Senior Centers coordinate and collaborate with other local agencies.
The Agency has an active Board of Trustees and Advisory Council with representatives from all nine counties. Our enthusiastic Advisory Council meets monthly and is involved with legislative issues, project/contract review and making recommendations to the Board, on issues affecting the entire Agency.
